Gun Debate In Senate Today

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Senate launches an emotionally charged debate today on new gun restrictions. But, the first scheduled vote is on an effort by conservatives to scuttle a Democratic bill. Two leading conservative senators, Democrat Joe Manchin of West Virginia and Republican Patrick Toomey of Pennsylvania are proposing compromise legislation that would extend required federal background checks to gun shows and online transactions. It would exempt only noncommercial, personal transactions from the checks.
