Hospital Settlement - Religion

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman says his office has reached a settlement with the New York City Health and Hospitals Corp. and the Jacobi Medical Center intended to protect employees' rights to practice their religions.

The attorney general's office says the corporation and Jacobi agreed to make changes after an investigation into complaints by Jewish nurses and a Seventh-day Adventist nurse who said they were denied time off to observe the Sabbath.

The settlement requires hospitals and medical facilities within the HHC network, including Jacobi, to implement a uniform policy on handling religious accommodation requests, to conduct regular training on that policy and the law, and to develop an internal complaint system.

Jacobi will also regularly report on its implementation of the procedures.
