"In God We Trust" up for House reaffirming vote as national motto

WASHINGTON (AP) - The House is scheduled to vote today on a
resolution reaffirming "In God We Trust" as the national motto.
The resolution also supports and encourages the public display
of "In God We Trust" in all public buildings, public schools, and
other government institutions. It's sponsored by Congressman Randy
Forbes, R-Va., and has 64 cosponsors.
"In God We Trust" first appeared on U.S. coins during the
Civil War in 1864. It officially became the national motto in 1956
and began appearing on paper currency the following year.
The resolution is meant to confront what Forbes calls, "a
disturbing trend of inaccuracies and omissions, misunderstandings
of church and state, rogue court challenges, and efforts to remove
God from the public domain by unelected bureaucrats."
Forbes also co-chairs the 100-member House Prayer Caucus.
