Joplin Church Re-Opens
JOPLIN, Mo. (AP) — A church that was destroyed by last year's tornado in Joplin, Mo., is celebrating its new worship center.
Members of St. Paul's United Methodist Church held their first service at the church Sunday since it was destroyed on May 22, 2011.
Pastor Aaron Brown says returning to the church was a rebirth for the congregation, which averages between 800 and 1,000 people.
The Joplin Globe reports that the only person who was in the church when the tornado hit was not hurt. But the storm ripped apart the worship center and heavily damaged most of the rest of the building. Six members of the congregation died elsewhere in the tornado.
The congregation moved around before October, when it started holding services in the church's repaired gymnasium.
