Ministers - Tax Breaks

MADISON, Wis. (AP) - The Freedom From Religion Foundation wants
a federal tax break for clergy housing costs declared
The Wisconsin-based foundation has filed a federal lawsuit in
Madison claiming that the provision violates separation of church
and state.
The atheist group is challenging the constitutionality of
Section 107 of the Internal Revenue Code, which allows clergy to
exempt the costs of homeownership or rent from their income.
The lawsuit says the exemption was adopted in 1954 "as a
reaction to the Cold War antipathy to atheism" and was intended to
subsidize and favor churches.
