Muslim-Christian violence

AMBON, Indonesia (AP) - Indonesian troops have been sent to
quell violent clashes between Muslims and Christians that left five
people dead and more than 150 injured.
The police chief in Ambon says the violence began after rumors
spread that a Muslim motorcycle taxi driver who died in a traffic
accident had been killed and tortured by Christians.
Police say Muslims confronted Christians after the man's
funeral, and the two sides traded insults and later started
throwing rocks and swinging machetes. The rioters also set fire to
cars and houses.
An Ambon government spokesman said a tense calm had returned to
the city by Monday afternoon.
