New North Central WA Fire Threatens Historical Building
OMAK, Wash. (AP) — Fire officials say a new wind-driven wildfire is threatening the historic St. Mary's Mission and school near Omak in north-central Washington. Ike Cawston of the Confederated Tribes of the Colville Reservation tells The Wenatchee World that the fire has burned across at least 500 acres — or nearly a square mile — of sagebrush and grass since it was reported late yesterday afternoon. Okanogan County Sheriff Frank Rogers estimates winds in the area have been as strong as 40 mph.
