New volunteers for Southern Baptists

   NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - Multiple natural disasters have taxed
the relief arm of the Southern Baptist Convention, but leaders say
the demand has inspired new volunteers and churches to get
     So far this year, Southern Baptist volunteers have prepared
856,000 meals, completed 4,368 chain saw jobs, and worked more than
42,000 volunteer days, according to the North American Mission
     The Southern Baptist Convention's disaster relief program is the
nation's third-largest, behind the American Red Cross and the
Salvation Army.
     David Acres, disaster relief director of the Tennessee Baptist
Convention, told The Tennessean that Southern Baptist volunteers
pay their own way and local teams supply needed equipment.
