Olympics - Hijab

LONDON (AP) — There is ongoing debate at the Olympics about a solution for a Saudi Olympian blocked from competing in judo because she wears a hijab, the head cover worn by some Muslim women.

The Saudi competitor (Wojdan Ali Seraj Abdulrahim Shahrkhani) hopes to compete without violating conservative Islamic restrictions. The situation has prompted organizers, the international judo federation and the Saudi Olympic Committee to huddle repeatedly in search of a solution.

A solution seems unlikely to please everyone. Hardliners in the Middle East can't see how her outfit will be sufficiently modest. Some rights groups say any compromise is out of the question.
