Pope - Germany
BERLIN (AP) - Pope Benedict has met with Jewish leaders in
Berlin, noting that it was there that the Nazis organized the World
War II Holocaust.
After addressing Germany's parliament Thursday, Benedict told
the Jewish delegation that "Adolf Hitler was a pagan idol, who
wanted to take the place of the biblical God."
The German-born pope told lawmakers that the Nazis showed what
happens when power is corrupted.
During his four-day visit, the pope has meetings with leaders of
Germany's Jewish and Muslim communities, three Masses and an
ecumenical service with Lutheran church members.
More than 250,000 people are registered to attend his Masses.
The first was open-air service Thursday night in Berlin's Olympic
Stadium, which was built by the Nazis for the 1936 games.
