Sentenced to Church

BAY MINETTE, Ala. (AP) - An Alabama city is delaying a new
program that would give first-time, nonviolent offenders the choice
of jail time or going to church each week for a year.
The alternative sentencing program was supposed to start this
week in Bay Minette Municipal Court, but the American Civil
Liberties Union of Alabama objected, calling it unconstitutional.
Police Chief Michael Rowland told the Press-Register that he
disagrees because defendants would be free to choose jail instead
of church. But he's waiting for the city attorney to approve the
program.
It would allow an offender to go to the church of his choice one
day a week for a year rather than face jail time and fines. Rowland
said 56 churches have expressed support.
