September 11 Anniversary

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama has quoted the Bible to encourage Americans to observe a National Day of Service and Remembrance on each anniversary of the terror attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.

At a Pentagon memorial service Tuesday, Obama said, "Scripture tells us 'Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.'" The president said, "There's no better way to honor the best in those who died than by discovering the best in ourselves."

Obama emphasized that the U.S. continues to fight terrorists, but not "Islam or any other religion."

The Army Chief of Chaplains, Major General Donald Rutherford, prayed for survivors of the attacks eleven years ago and for those who continue to grieve the nearly 3,000 victims.

The president and first lady Michelle Obama placed a wreath at the Pentagon and visited the graves of service members killed in Afghanistan and Iraq at Arlington National Cemetery.
