Southern Baptist - Evolution

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Public discussion of evolution often turns into a nasty debate between young-earth creationists on the one side and atheists who believe science disproves the existence of God on the other.

Some Southern Baptist seminary professors and evangelical scientists believe it doesn't have to be that way.

In a series of essays on the BioLogos website, they debate questions such as whether Adam and Eve were real people whose sin brought death into the world, requiring redemption through Jesus Christ's death and resurrection.

Some scientists argue that the gene pool from which modern humans descended was never as small as two individuals. Instead, they suggest that God may have made a covenant with a particular couple whose disobedience brought about spiritual death.

While many Christians see the Bible's creation story as metaphorical, others object that doing so undermines scriptural authority.
