Superstorm -NJ Church

BELMAR, N.J. (AP) — Hundreds of people have attended Sunday Mass in flood-ravaged Belmar, N.J.

Trenton Bishop David O'Connell told worshippers at the Church of Saint Rose that like the apostle Paul, believers may be "afflicted in every way but never crushed, full of doubts but never despairing."

Parishioners wore parkas, scarves and waterproof boots as they packed the pews and stood in the aisles of the chilly church. Firefighters and police officers sat in the front rows and drew sustained applause.

Streets near the church were underwater as late as Saturday. The waters had receded by Sunday but left behind slippery, pungent mud.

About 1 million homes and businesses across New Jersey remained without electricity Sunday, and many of those customers may not have service restored until Wednesday. The storm has been blamed for 23 deaths in the state and more than 100 overall.
