Superstorm - NYC Church

NEW YORK (AP) — Brooklyn Bishop Nicholas DiMarzio has assured Catholics in devastated Breezy Point that their neighborhood "will rise again" and that the church will be there for them.

DiMarzio led Mass Sunday at a church in the beachfront neighborhood where fire pushed by superstorm Sandy's raging winds destroyed as many as 100 homes and buildings as the rest of the community flooded.

DiMarzio said evil is in the world, but Christians can find meaning in their afflictions by joining their sufferings to those of Jesus Christ.

Hundreds of parishioners spilled out the doors as they held candles in a church without electricity.

Democratic U.S. Sen. Chuck Schumer attended the Mass, along with Congressman Bob Turner, whose house was destroyed.

Turner said the rebuilding process has already begun but warned that the community desperately needs medical supplies, like tetanus shots and asthma medication.
