Supreme Court Hears About Delayed Generic Release

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Supreme Court hears arguments today in a case pitting the government against drug makers over the practice of paying to delay the release of much cheaper generic drugs. Federal regulators argue these deals deny American consumers, usually for years, steep price declines that can top 90 percent. The pharmaceutical companies say they need the extra money they make to recover the billions they spend on research. Both Big Pharma and generic makers say the end result is often earlier generic releases.
