TWO U OF W PROFS WIN PRESTIGIOUS WHITEHOUSE AWARD

  SEATTLE (AP) - Two University of Washington faculty members are
being honored by the White House with presidential early career
awards for scientists and engineers. The university says the awards
are among the most prestigious for scientists and engineers in the
early stages of their research careers.
     Ben Kerr, an assistant professor of biology, is being recognized
for his research and educational activities studying the way that
hosts of infectious diseases move around.
     He uses mathematical models, computer simulations and microbial
experiments to address how social network structure affects

     The second honoree is Dr. Kristina Utzschneider, an assistant
professor of medicine in the Division of Metabolism, Endocrinology
and Nutrition. She is part of a group of scientists studying why
people get type 2 diabetes and other diseases related to obesity.
