US - Afghanistan Rescue

WASHINGTON (AP) — A member of a U.S. special operations team has been killed in the weekend rescue of a Colorado doctor working with a Christian relief group in Afghanistan.

A spokesman for U.S. forces in Afghanistan says Dr. Dilip Joseph, the medical adviser for Colorado Springs-based Morning Star Development, was rescued Sunday after intelligence showed he was in imminent danger of injury or possible death.

Joseph and two co-workers had been abducted by the Taliban last Wednesday.

President Obama said in a statement that the special operator who died in the rescue "gave his life for his fellow Americans."

Morning Star said in a statement that Joseph was uninjured and would probably return home in a few days. The group said his co-workers were freed by their captors before the rescue, but added that it did not pay a ransom for their release.

Morning Star thanked the U.S. military and the many people "who offered counsel, support and prayers during this event."
