WASHINGTON (AP) — A George Washington University professor says hundreds of Coptic Christian women have been abducted in Egypt where many are forced to convert to Islam.
Professor Michele Clark testified Wednesday at a hearing of the U.S. Helsinki Commission chaired by Congressman Chris Smith.
The New Jersey Republican said a State Department official was invited to testify but failed to appear. Smith said there's no indication the U.S. has raised the issue with Egypt.
Egyptian officials have said Christian women sometimes elope, convert to Islam and voluntarily cut off relations with their families, but Clark said the cases more often involve abductions.
An Egyptian woman who escaped a kidnap attempt testified through a translator that Coptic women also face insults and assaults when they go out in public.
