Washington No. 1 Mint Oil Producer in US
KENNEWICK, Wash. (AP) — Eastern Washington farmers in Adams, Grant and Yakima counties are finishing the mint harvest that makes the state the top producer of mint oil in the nation.
Washington makes enough mint oil each year to flavor 135 sticks of gum for every American.
Washington Mint Commission Executive Director Rod Christensen told the Tri-City Herald one of the major advantages for the state crop is its quality.
Most of the mint oil is processed by a dealer near Harrah, and about half the crop is exported.
Washington has about 150 growers who produce 3.5 million gallons of mint oil a year. The crop is valued at $80 million.
