Hundreds gather for vigil on Boston Common

BOSTON (AP) — Hundreds of people have attended a candlelight vigil in Boston for victims of Monday's marathon bombings.
A minister told hundreds of mourners that God wasn't in the evil that was committed, but was among the emergency responders who heroically tended to scores of wounded runners and bystanders.
Three people were killed and more than 170 people were injured in the bombings near the end of the race on Monday.
Participants in the vigil sang "Amazing Grace" and prayed that God would embrace the eight-year-old boy who was killed.

Obama to attend interfaith service in Boston on Thursday

BOSTON (AP) — President Barack Obama will visit Boston on Thursday, three days after the deadly bombings at the Boston Marathon.
Massachusetts Gov. Deval (deh-VAHL') Patrick says Obama will attend an interfaith service at the Roman Catholic Cathedral of the Holy Cross. The White House says Obama will speak at the prayer service in memory of the deceased and for the healing of the wounded.
Hours after the explosions, Obama vowed that those responsible would be brought to justice. In remarks Tuesday, he called the bombings an act of terrorism but said investigators still don't know who carried them out.

Saudi king condemns Boston Marathon bombings

RIYADH, Saudi Arabia (AP) — The king of Saudi Arabia is condemning the Boston Marathon bombings, saying no religion or morals would condone such an attack.
In a condolences message to President Barack Obama and the American people, King Abdullah said the perpetrators of such "heinous terrorist acts" are "enemies of any humane considerations." He said the perpetrators represent only themselves.
In a separate statement, the Saudi Embassy said a Saudi woman was among those injured, suffering minor injuries from glass fragments.
The Saudi government has been cracking down on Islamic militants since al-Qaida launched a wave of attacks in the country in 2003, killing dozens. It has sought to distance itself from terrorist acts in the past, including the Sept. 11 attacks, where 15 of the 19 hijackers involved were Saudi citizens.

George Beverly Shea, who sang at Billy Graham crusades for decades, dies at 104

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — George Beverly Shea, the booming baritone who sang to millions of Christians at evangelist Billy Graham's crusades, has died after a brief illness. He was 104.
Spokesman Brent Rinehart of the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association says Shea died Tuesday night after a brief illness.
Shea was well-known as a gospel soloist before he and Graham met in the early 1940s. He joined Graham's crusade team in 1947 and stayed until Graham's declining health ended most of the evangelist's public appearances nearly 60 years later.
Besides his distinctive voice, Shea was known for his trademark rendition of "How Great Thou Art" and his inspirational "The Wonder of It All."

Young Evangelicals - Gay Marriage

Young Christians face hostile peers on marriage issue

WASHINGTON (AP) — Some young evangelicals say last week's national focus on gay marriage left them feeling alienated from their peers.
Kristin Rudolph of the Institute on Religion and Democracy says it was discouraging to see millions of people change their Facebook profile pictures to equal signs to show their support for gay marriage. She said it took courage to present a traditional view that sounds intolerant.
Family Research Council editor Jessica Prol says many young people think religious conservatives simply don't want them to have fun.
Heritage Foundation Policy Analyst Andrew Walker says it looks like he and other young evangelicals are becoming "the moral minority" in an "increasingly hostile" culture. But he said instead of hiding or conforming, the church needs to reclaim its moral authority.
Rudolph says "because God reigns," a seemingly lost cause, "if just and good, is never really lost, but just awaiting vindication."

Franklin Graham: Obama basketball diplomacy could soothe Kim Jong Un

BOONE, N.C. (AP) — The Rev. Franklin Graham says President Barack Obama could use basketball diplomacy to defuse tensions with North Korea and its young leader.
The son of evangelist Billy Graham says Obama should contact Kim Jong Un, whose regime has threatened to launch nuclear strikes on South Korea and the U.S.
Franklin Graham told KTIS radio that since Kim is in his 20s and loves basketball, Obama could invite him "to the finals."
The NCAA college basketball championship game will be played Monday night in Atlanta.
Franklin Graham has visited North Korea four times and his Samaritan's Purse humanitarian organization has operated there for years. His mother, the late Ruth Bell Graham, attended high school in Pyongyang in the 1930s and his father, Billy Graham, preached there in 1992.

Officials: More than $40,000 taken from church

SHELBY TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) — Officials say more than $40,000 in cash was stolen from a Michigan church after its Easter services.

School - Jesus Portrait

Groups: Remove Jesus portrait from Ohio school

CINCINNATI (AP) — Two groups that sued to stop the display of a Jesus portrait in an Ohio school district's middle school now want the portrait removed from the wall of a high school where it was moved last month.
The American Civil Liberties Union of Ohio and the Wisconsin-based Freedom from Religion Foundation filed a federal lawsuit in February charging that the portrait, which was then displayed in the Jackson City Schools middle school, unconstitutionally promoted religion in a public school. They filed an amended complaint Monday, asking the court to also prohibit display of the portrait in the high school for the same reason.
